What counts as construction waste

This is the most common question, because putting this waste in an ordinary rubbish container is prohibited:

  • demolition debris — brick, block and concrete from a removed wall
  • plaster, cement mortar, bags of hardened mix
  • old ceramic tiles and wall tiles
  • plasterboard offcuts and profile
  • strip-out waste — old doors, windows, frames
  • old parquet, laminate, linoleum, skirting
  • sanitaryware — a removed toilet, bath, basin, pipes
  • ceiling and wall insulation, polystyrene
  • packaging and leftover materials after a renovation

If furniture and household items are mixed in with the debris, that is entirely normal and fits on one call-out — see old-furniture and junk removal.

Call-out options and indicative prices

Two vehicle sizes are standard in this market. Volume is assessed together on the call.

How to choose a provider for waste removal

Five questions — on this service a cheap price often means something is not included:

  1. 01 “Is loading included in the price?” — if not, you have to bring the debris down to the yard yourself.
  2. 02 “Where do you take the waste?” — the answer should be a licensed landfill, not “we’ll deal with it”.
  3. 03 “Is carrying it down from the flat included?” — without a lift that is most of the time spent.
  4. 04 “Do you bring the bags?” — some providers bring them, some expect the waste to be bagged already.
  5. 05 “Is cleaning the stairwell included?” — this should not be something to argue about afterwards.

Leaving construction waste in the street or beside an ordinary container is a legal violation and is subject to a fine. If a provider is vague about where the waste goes, treat that as a warning sign.

How removal works

  1. Stage 01

    Call and assessment

They need the type of waste, the approximate volume (in bags, if it is already bagged), the floor and whether there is a lift. A photo by Viber or WhatsApp speeds the assessment up.

  2. Stage 02

    Carrying down and loading

The crew bags the waste, brings it down and loads it. If it is already bagged and out in the yard, the call-out is cheaper and quicker — mention that on the call.

  3. Stage 03

    Cleaning up

After loading, the part of the stairwell and yard where the work took place is swept.

  4. Stage 04

    Delivery to the landfill

The waste goes to a licensed landfill. Leaving construction waste in the street or beside an ordinary container is a legal violation.

Why construction waste does not go in an ordinary container

The containers standing in Tbilisi courtyards are for household rubbish. Construction waste is prohibited in them for two reasons: weight — even a few bags of plaster make a container heavy enough that the refuse truck cannot lift it — and volume, which takes up the whole building’s rubbish capacity.

Construction waste therefore has to be removed separately. Unauthorised dumping of building waste incurs administrative liability.

If a renovation is under way and debris is accumulating gradually, it is better to plan removal in stages — so the stairwell is not blocked for months.

Frequently asked questions

How much does construction-waste removal cost?
The price usually includes the vehicle, the loaders, the loading and delivery to the landfill. The individual provider gives an exact figure once the volume has been assessed.
Is loading included, or do I have to bring it out myself?
With most providers loading is included. If the waste is already bagged and out in the yard, the call-out is cheaper — mention it on the call. This is one of the main points on which offers differ.
Do they leave a skip, or take it away the same day?
In Tbilisi the normal principle is a truck call-out: the crew arrives, loads and takes it away the same day. Leaving a skip for days is rare. If waste is accumulating gradually, several call-outs are usually agreed.
Will they take asbestos or hazardous waste?
No. Asbestos, chemical waste and paint and solvent residues require specialist disposal and are outside the scope of ordinary removal providers. Ordinary construction waste — yes.
Do they work at weekends and in the evening?
Many providers do — removing renovation debris is often most convenient at the weekend. Working hours are shown on the cards where the provider has supplied them.
Is regular removal from a building site possible?
Yes. If waste accumulates continuously on a site, providers will agree a schedule — once a week or as needed. For businesses, an invoice and cashless payment.
