Together with a move

If a provider is moving the furniture, taking standard pieces apart and reassembling them is usually already part of the service and is not charged separately. Sliding-door wardrobes and fitted kitchens are the exception.

A separate call-out

If nothing is going anywhere and you only need assembly or disassembly — boxes brought from the shop, say, or taking furniture apart before renovation — it is charged per item or by the hour.

How to choose a fitter or a provider

Four questions — on this work the outcome varies a great deal:

  1. 01 “Do you work on sliding-door wardrobes?” — the hardest type, and not everyone takes them.
  2. 02 “Do you bring a drill and a spirit level?” — essential for anything fixed to a wall.
  3. 03 “Is the price per item or hourly?” — with many items, hourly is cheaper.
  4. 04 “What do you do if a part is missing?” — the right answer is “I stop and tell you”, not “I’ll assemble it somehow”.

How the work runs

  1. Stage 01

    Confirming what the furniture is

    On the call they need the type of furniture and the number of items. A photo by Viber or WhatsApp makes the assessment considerably more accurate.

  2. Stage 02

    Disassembly, keeping the fittings

    Screws, cam locks, catches and brackets go into a separate bag, labelled with the piece they came from. Lost fittings are exactly why furniture so often cannot be reassembled in the new flat.

  3. Stage 03

    Assembly and adjustment

    Once assembled, doors and drawers are adjusted, feet are levelled and stability is checked. On a sliding-door wardrobe, the runners and guides too.

  4. Stage 04

    Fixing to the wall

    Tall wardrobes and shelves have to be secured to the wall — particularly with a child in the house. They are fixed with an anchor suited to the wall type.

Assembling furniture from flat-pack boxes

New furniture arrives in boxes with instructions and a bag of fittings. In theory that is simple; in practice a single sliding-door wardrobe takes an inexperienced person a whole day, and one cam lock tightened the wrong way ruins the piece permanently.

An experienced crew arrives with tools: screwdriver, drill, spirit level, square. During assembly they check that every part is present — if there is a factory defect, it needs to come to light then, before the furniture is damaged.

Leftover cardboard, polystyrene and film can often be taken away, if agreed in advance.

Frequently asked questions

How much does assembling a wardrobe cost?
A sliding-door wardrobe is harder because of the runners and guides and is priced separately. The provider gives an exact figure after seeing a photo.
Does the crew bring tools?
Yes, as standard — screwdriver, drill, spirit level, keys. You need to prepare nothing. If a specific tool is required, mention it on the call.
What if a part is missing or damaged?
The correct practice is to stop work on that item and show you exactly what is missing, so you can go back to the shop. Forcing a piece together with a part missing damages the structure.
Can old furniture be taken apart if it is simply being thrown out?
Yes. An old wardrobe often will not go through the door in one piece and has to be dismantled where it stands. If it is being discarded, many providers will take it away on the same call-out — that is the old-furniture and junk removal service.
Is assembling a fitted kitchen included?
Assembling the units, hanging them and adjusting them — yes. Connecting plumbing and electrics (dishwasher, hob, extractor) is normally not included — that is a job for the relevant trade.
